Why some writing sounds like ChatGPT
AI models reach for the same words and the same shapes. Researchers counted the effect in more than 15 million medical abstracts: certain style words became far more common after ChatGPT arrived (Kobak and colleagues, Science Advances, 2025). Wikipedia's editors keep a guide to the same signs, from words like “delve” and “tapestry” to phrases like “stands as a testament to” (Wikipedia: Signs of AI writing). Readers notice them too, and copy full of them sounds like every other website.
What this checker marks
- The words and puffery Wikipedia's guide lists, such as “delve”, “vibrant”, “plays a pivotal role” and “boasts”.
- “Not just X, it's Y”: setting something up only to knock it down, which the guide calls a negative parallelism.
- Lists of three describing words, like “faster, smarter and simpler”, there for rhythm more than meaning.
- Long dashes, which many readers now take as a sign of AI.
- Stock phrases from Copytone's own list, such as “in today's fast-paced world”, “unlock” and “elevate”, and corporate buzzwords such as “seamless” and “solutions”.
What it can't tell you
Whether AI wrote it. People wrote this way long before ChatGPT, and Wikipedia's own guide warns that judging it from style alone is “not as easy as it seems”. So this checker never gives a verdict or a score. Each find is something to look at: keep it if it's the best way to say what you mean. It can't tell whether a sentence is true, or whether it sounds like the people you write for.
Cutting clichés is half of it. Your customers' words are the rest.
Taking out what everyone says leaves room for what only you can say, and your customers usually say it best. The brand voice checker finds the phrases your customers use in the reviews you paste, and shows where your homepage says it differently. Copytone does it for everything your team writes.
